What is a Goal Cycle
A goal cycle (sometimes also referred to as OKR cycle) defines the period in which your organization sets goals in the beginning, works on them over time, and conducts an OKR review and retrospective towards the end.
While goal cycles of 3 or 4 months are most common, you can change the duration of every Goal Cycle in Workpath individually. For your organization, there is always one active cycle.
The active cycle is shown by default on the platform. You can navigate to previous or upcoming cycles with the cycle switcher in the top right corner of the tool.
Create a new Goal Cycle by following these steps:
- Click on your organization icon
- Select organization settings
- Select Goal Cycles
- Click on Create Cycle
- Define the parameters of the created cycle
- Choose a name for the new cycle in the upper left field. The name may have up to 8 characters, e.g. ‘Q4 2019’.
- Pick a start and end date for the new cycle
- Click Save to create the new cycle
Typically, cycles start when a new quarter begins (e.g., April 1st) and end with its last day (e.g., June 30th). However, Workpath allows you to also set up cycles with some time in between or with an overlap. The latter is not recommended.
You can create more than one Goal Cycle, but only one cycle can be active at any given time. Adjacent cycles show either as previous or upcoming cycle based on the currently active Goal Cycle.
Activate the next cycle:
At the latest, shortly after the new cycle period has begun, the goal cycle should be activated and thus become the current goal cycle of your organization. To activate a new cycle:
- Click on your organization icon
- Select organization settings
- Select Goal Cycles
- Click on Start Upcoming Cycle
Created cycles can also be deleted, edited and activated by clicking on the context menu on the right side.
